Wojciech Grega Piotr Bania Department of Automatics, AGH University of Science and Technology, 30-059 Kraków, Al. Mickiewicza 30, Poland [email protected], [email protected] ABSTRACT This paper deals with a supervisory control strategy which enables to optimize heat energy distribution between buildings with discontinuous operation. The core principle of the energy saving algorithm is based on lowering the night-time temperature and increasing (preheating) it in the morning. One important problem of this strategy consists in keeping peak demand of energy below the maximum power of the central energy source. This requires a proper structure and proper settings of the local control algorithms. A model-reference nonlinear predictive control algorithm is studied and the effects of peak power demand reduction are compared with a linear control method.

Findings from Seven Years of Field Performance Data for Automated Demand Response in Commercial Buildings

California is a leader in automating demand response (DR) to promote low-cost, consistent, and predictable electric grid management tools. Over 250 commercial and industrial facilities in California participate in fully-automated programs providing over 60 MW of peak DR savings. This paper presents a summary of Open Automated DR (OpenADR) implementation by each of the investor-owned utilities i...

Development and Application of an Inverse Building Model for Demand Response in Small Commercial Buildings

This paper describes development of an inverse building model and its application in studying the performance of a demand-limiting (DL) control strategy. The demand-limiting strategy involves precooling (PC) a building during unoccupied times, maintaining the zone temperature setpoints at the lower limit of comfort during off-peak, occupied periods, and then limiting the peak cooling rate to a ...

Optimal Supervisory HVAC Control: Experiences in Australia

A number of heating, ventilation and air-conditioning (HVAC) system vendors and operators have started to implement demand management systems in commercial buildings, yet we contend that the impact of such systems on building performance and occupant comfort is poorly understood. This paper examines such issues, showing the results from demand response experiments in two large office buildings....

Techno-Economic Appraisal of Using Radio Frequency For Energy Consevation in the Heating System of Residential Buildings

Residential and commercial sectors are the main consumers of energy. According to available data, these two sectors account for more than one-third of total energy use. Moreover, heating and cooling systems contribute to the major share of energy use in a building. The current research economically evaluates the radio-frequency heating systems for use in residential buildings. A building in Dis...
